I once had a friend who’s bike was stolen off the campus in his local university. You’d think no one would steal a bicycle out open in the public! That is why it is important to secure your bikes to deter others from such an easy steal. Remember, deterrence is one way of protection. One way to do this is by using the Alaska Bear Self-Coiling Cable Combination Bike Lock, as shown below.
When you purchase the item, you will receive the following contents:
- cable lock – 4 ft long, 1/2 inch diameter; made of braided steel cable to resist cuts; coated with vinyl to protect your paint from scratches
- manual – tells you how to reset the combination lock code to use your personal security code; easy to follow English instructions, with pictures to guide you
- mounting bracket – included so you can bring the lock with you everywhere your bike goes; this is optional, but is convenient to have
The cable lock has a 4-digit combination, as shown below, which allows for at least 10,000 possible combinations.
The “key” part of the lock with its 4 grooves is shown below for your reference:
Combination locks mean that you don’t have to carry any keys and run the risk of losing the key. How many of you have ended up with useless padlocks because you couldn’t find the key anywhere? I know I have done that. The good news about this lock is that even when you forget the combination (provided the cable lock is not connected) you can easily reset with a different code and use again.
Resetting the code is quite easy using the included manual. Just twist the “knob” (for my lack of a better word) at the end of the cable to the direction shown in the arrow. Put in your new code and once you have done that, just twist back to the original position until you hear a click. Now you have a new code! It really is that easy!
The cable has an insert that allows you to slide in the groove (like a puzzle piece that fits together) into the mounting bracket that is included. Here’s what it will look like once the part of the cable that slips in to the groove is securely placed:
Just push the red button as needed. Mount the bracket anywhere in your bike where it can fit, slide in the cable, and now you have a piece of security equipment for you to use wherever your bike goes.
Of course, this cable lock doesn’t have to be used for bikes only. You can secure your sheds, items in your garage (to prevent someone from quickly grabbing items and running away), and other uses.
