Our 1-yr old is getting more curious as the days go by. One time, as I was reviewing the security camera, I observed her opening one of the kitchen cabinets. It was then that I decided it was time to finally secure the kitchen area. We have an open plan for the house, so it’s pretty much easy for her to get to the kitchen. These safety baby magnetic cabinet locks (shown below) were a great option. In fact, I think they are a better option than the typical baby locks that are sold in the local store.

One thing that I like about it, in comparison to the other locks sold in stores, is that these set of baby safety locks do not require any type of drilling at all, and this is due to the strong 3M adhesive tapes that is utilized. In my case, that means my wife is happier that I don’t have to put any holes through her precious cabinets! It’s a win-win situation!

A unique feature is the magnetic mechanism of the lock. If installed properly, positioning the magnet over the lock causes the locking mechanism to unlock. You just have to remember where the lock position is inside the cabinet, and when you place the “head” or “white circle” (for lack of a better word; the part that looks like a mushroom head in the photo) of magnet over it, the lock disengages. By the way, this “head” or “white circle” that I am referring to is called the key, which you can see below.

Just for demonstration purposes, I placed the key unto the lock in the photo above so that you can see the attraction between the magnets as the key and the lock stuck to each other. You cannot see the “hook” because the lock has already disengaged. Removing the key releases the hook, which should then be sticking out of the lock. That is what you are looking at in the below photo.

The part that you see below is what “catches” the “hook” — preventing your child from opening the cabinet. Again, there’s no drilling involved… just the use of strong 3M adhesives. Just peel and stick… it’s that simple!

In case you forget the specific area, it’s not even a big deal then; just get an idea of the general location and slide the magnetic “head” or “circle” over the area until you hear a click. The magnet is powerful enough to be detected with the thickness of a standard cabinetry material.

One thing that I asked myself was this: “But what if I lose the white circle key? How can I unlock it then??” As I found out, this wouldn’t be a problem either. I looked for a metallic object and placed it over the lock, and guess what happened… the lock disengaged and I was able to open the cabinet! Still, I’d recommend that you don’t lose the white circle, as the unit works best with it. In fact, it is paired up with a “key holder” that you can stick somewhere. When not in use, just place the white circle over it and you don’t have to worry about looking for it when it’s time to open the cabinets.

The only drawback in my specific case is that I couldn’t install it properly on our kitchen drawers based on how they were made. Our kitchen drawers were custom made, and there was just no good way to install and use these locks for it. Nonetheless, these safety locks worked awesome with our kitchen cabinets. In fact, I can’t complain. These are meant for cabinet use.

We’ve already witnessed our little one try to pry open the cabinet without success, and eventually decided to walk along and move on to her toys that are readily available in the house. I almost felt bad for her, but this is for her safety.
