Got a wiggly child? Then the Wiggle Seat from Sensory Solutions could provide the help you have been looking for!
I have to be honest with you… I was doubtful! But I laughed when I tried it out! It actually worked on my 17-month old daughter on its first use! Here she is eating corn and sitting on the Wiggle Seat, next to the computer. Normally, she’d grab the computer keyboard right away and drop the corn from her hands, banging the computer keys with delight. She actually stayed in place!
The funny part is that whenever she sees the Wiggle Seat, she shakes her hips and does the wiggle motion — mimicking what she’d be doing if she were to sit on it. Makes me laugh.
I think the way this works is that it keeps the child focused on the “wiggle” as the child tries to maintain his or her balance/posture as he or she continues to sit on it. I can see how this can help with concentration. It’s like a “mind over matter” kind of thing. Hard to explain, but maybe you should get your own to know what I mean. LOL.
I don’t know how long my child can continue to stay still using this seat, but definitely results will vary individually. If your child get’s used to it, then I suggest flipping the seat over so the child can sit on a different type of surface/texture. Then use the other side again when it stops working and keep the cycle going. I’ve seen something similar to this used on old folks for physical therapy sessions, so I guess if the kids get tired of it, I can save it for my old age. Heh-heh-heh.
The photos below show the 2 different sides, and the textures associated with each side giving different available sensations. One has less surface area of “pointy things” (for lack of a better word), while the other side is definitely more pronounced (it’s more “pointy” — and the pointy things are higher, and they are closer together).
By the way, the Wiggle Seat set from Sensory Solutions come with a pump in case you need to add more air, depending on how firm or “wiggly” you want the seat to be. The photo above shows the tip of the pump and the small hole on the seat where to insert it.
Wanna give this a shot and see if it works with your child? The Sensory Solutions Wiggle Seat is currently available at Amazon. There is a vast array of color options available. I suggest choosing your child’s favorite color.
